The Benefits of Seeking Knowledge

Seeking knowledge has many benefits for a Muslim in both this world and the hereafter. Some of these benefits are:

  • Seeking knowledge increases one's faith in Allah and His signs. Allah says in the Quran: "It is only those who have knowledge among His servants that fear Allah." (35:28)

  • Seeking knowledge purifies one's character and manners. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever seeks knowledge sincerely for Allah's sake will become more humble." (Ibn Majah)

  • Seeking knowledge enhances one's understanding and appreciation of Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever Allah wants good for him, He gives him understanding of the religion." (Bukhari)

  • Seeking knowledge enables one to perform acts of worship correctly and sincerely. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim." (Ibn Majah)

  • Seeking knowledge protects one from ignorance, doubt and deviation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever follows a path in pursuit of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise." (Muslim)

  • Seeking knowledge earns one respect and honor among people. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The superiority of a scholar over a worshipper is like that of the moon over the stars." (Tirmidhi)

  • Seeking knowledge brings one closer to Allah and His mercy. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Allah makes the way to Paradise easy for him who treads the path in search of knowledge." (Muslim)

The Etiquettes of Seeking Knowledge

Seeking knowledge is not only a matter of acquiring information or memorizing facts. It is also a matter of developing a proper attitude and behavior towards learning. Some of the etiquettes that a seeker of knowledge should observe are:

  • To have a sincere intention for seeking knowledge for Allah's sake alone, not for worldly gain or fame. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever seeks knowledge to compete with scholars or argue with fools or attract people's attention will enter Hellfire." (Tirmidhi)

  • To choose the best subjects that are most beneficial for one's religion and life. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it." (Bukhari)

  • To select qualified teachers who are knowledgeable, pious and trustworthy. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The scholars are the inheritors of the prophets." (Abu Dawud)

  • To respect and honor one's teachers by listening attentively, asking politely, obeying sincerely and thanking generously. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "He who does not respect our elders is not from us." (Ahmad)

  • To use reliable books that are authentic, clear and comprehensive. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Beware of newly invented matters in religion, for every innovation is misguidance." (Abu Dawud)

  • To adopt effective methods of learning that suit one's level, ability and goal. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Teach people according to their capacity." (Bukhari)

  • To be humble, diligent and grateful in seeking knowledge. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "No one will enter Paradise who has an atom's weight of pride in his heart." (Muslim)

The Application of Knowledge

The ultimate purpose of seeking knowledge is not to accumulate information or impress people but to apply it in one's life for Allah's sake. Some of the ways that a seeker of knowledge should apply his or her knowledge are:

  • To act upon what one learns according to Allah's commands and prohibitions. Allah says in the Quran: "O you who have believed! Why do you say what you do not do?" (61:2)

  • To teach what one learns to others who need it or benefit from it. Allah says in the Quran: "And remind for indeed reminder benefits believers." (51:55)

  • To avoid what contradicts or harms one's knowledge such as sins, innovations or disputes. Allah says in the Quran: "And cooperate in righteousness and piety but do not cooperate in sin and aggression." (5:2)

  • To balance between worldly and spiritual knowledge by using both for Allah's sake. Allah says in the Quran: "And seek by means of what Allah has given you the abode of Hereafter; but do not forget your share from this world." (28:77)

  • To balance between theory and practice by combining both with wisdom and moderation. Allah says in the Quran: "And thus we have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over mankind." (2:143)
